Terex is a large manufacturer of heavy equipment and supplier for various industries such as: construction, recycling, surface mining, shipping or transportation. The company has over 18,000 employees and sells different products in more than 170 countries in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Terex is currently (2007) listed at 314 on the Fortune 500 list, with a 41 place advance from the past year (2006).

Website

Terex.com follows closely the ground principles associated with corporate web design. An interactive front page, highlighting the company’s main products as well as an extensive customer support section and a product catalog clearly show that the website’s main focus is towards its customer base.

Behind the brand image though, the website features all the major facilities expected from a website of this caliber. Investor Relations, Press Room, Employment Opportunities, all have their place and are blended seamlessly in the design.

Another important facet of Terex.com is the value that the website puts on its collaborators and resellers, which clearly are an important part of the marketing and retail network.

History

Terex developed an impressive and prolific business in the past several years. The company owes its great success to an intelligent combination of acquisitions designed to expand the range of products offered and their affirmed policy to assure a highly competitive price/quality ratio.

They begun the series of acquisition in 1995 with PPM Cranes and continued with Clark Material Handling, Simon-Ro and Telelect. In 1998 Terex improved its mining business with the acquisition of Payhauler and O$K Mining. During the next few years Terex expanded in various industrial fields such as light construction, compact equipment and road building equipment. This way, by 2002, Terex became a leading crane company.

In 2006 Terex had net a net income of 7.6 billion dollars and became the world’s third largest construction equipment producer.

Nowadays the company is focusing on building a franchise under the Terex brand name; for this purpose the company is migrating the historic brand names for many of its products to the Terex brand.

Terex companies are now leaders in a variety of industries. This didn’t stopped Ronald DeFeo, the company’s chairman to state that Terex is a young company, but still with a lot of potential, that it still has a long and successful road ahead of it and indicates that there may be more surprises yet to come.

The company’s position solidified in the past years as the third heavy equipment producer behind Caterpillar and Komatsu. Terex presents itself as a pioneer in the equipment business and it’s aiming for 12 billion dollars in revenue by 2010.

Impact

Terex is a relative new brand and thus the brand recognition factor sits at a relatively low level. Despite this, the aura that surrounds the heavy equipment industry begins to be felt. Typically the brand is associated with the construction works that are being developed with its help, just as it happened with its two main rivals Caterpillar and Komatsu. Thus it is no wonder that Terex has begun to implant itself in the collective mind as a mix of raw power and extreme engineering.
