Description

Jim Collins was born in Berkeley California. He lived there until 1990, attending the University of California at Berkeley and graduating with a BA from the department of south and southeast asian studies. Soon after graduation he embarked on another backpacking tour around the world (the first occurred during a year-off from university). While in South Africa he took a NAUI divemaster course and worked as a divemaster for Ocean Divers International in Cape Town. He later spent time working in Thailand as a divemaster for Koh Samui Divers (now Samui International Diving School).

Upon returning to the states Jim went to Jackson Hole to visit a friend for a few weeks during the winter. He never left. So much for aspirations of attending the graduate business school at Berkeley. Soon after establishing himself in Jackson Hole he attended the ski school hiring clinic at Teton Village and was hired that season of '91-'92.

The next few years were spent working for the ski school in the Winter and working as a dive instructor in the summer for Samui International in Thailand and for Solomon Sea Divers at Munda in the Solomon Islands. As a young teenager Jim's father took him on many kayaking trips on the rivers of Oregon, northern California and Idaho with Orange Torpedo Trips out of Grants Pass Oregon. This allowed him to secure a job as a river guide for Mad River Boat Trips on the Snake River in Jackson Hole. Working on the Snake contributed to his already extensive rafting experiences on the Salmon river, middle fork of the Salmon, Yampa river, Desolation and Gray canyons of the Green river, Westwater canyon of the Coloradao, Cataract Canyon of the Colorado, San Juan river and of course the magnificent Grand Canyon of the Colorado. Of which Jim has organized or participated in 10 private river trips. Jim is a member of the Grand Canyon Private Boaters Association.
