The TEA TREE has been trading in Winchelsea since the early 90's and is now owned by Jo and Steve Turner a local Winchelsea family. It is known as one of the premier Tea Rooms in Sussex, situated in the High Street in the centre of the Historic Medieval Cinque Port Town .The 15th Century listed building was once the town forge and features a wealth of period features. Inglenook fire place, original beamed ceilings and a walled courtyard garden. The town itself, founded by King Edward 1, on a hill above the sea once was a major Port crucial to the defence of the South Coast. Within a short walk of the Tea Room you can discover the old Town Gates Ancient Monuments, the Court Hall Museum and the Church of St Thomas the Martyr. The streets themselves are a reminder of a bygone time when the pace of life was less frantic. We always look forward to seeing old friends from previous visits and new guests who discover us for the first time.

We offer an all day menu with a range of sandwiches, platters, salads and hot meals together with home baked cakes, scones, our famous meringues and a range of mouth-watering puddings. Vegetarian options are always available and we are "No Smoking" throughout We were honoured to receive the silver award in 1996 in the National Catering Awards. The Heartbeat Award for healthy eating in 1997, 98 & 99. Acclaimed "Best Tea Room in Sussex" in the recently republished book "Secret Sussex Tea Trail". The Tea Room was featured on Meridian TV "ALFRESCO" programme in June 1999. In 2001 we were delighted to accept an invitation to become a member of the London Tea Council's exclusive Guild of Tea Shops. In 2003 and again in 2005 we were a runner up in the Guild's national "TOP TEA PLACE" competition. In 2004 the BBC Good Food Magazine named us "The Best" for Cream Teas.

In addition to our tea-rooms and restaurant we are delighted to offer our customers a wide range of teas and coffees from around the world. These include pure single estate, speciality, fair-trade, organic and we also have a range of flavoured coffees, herbal and fruit teas to suit all tastes. We have recently introduced two new teas for you to try "Moon Palace Chun Mee" a delightful green tea from China and a green "Earl Grey". In our Gift Shop we have a range of gifts and collectables for that "Special Occasion", many of which are Fairtrade. Greeting Cards which include an exclusive range of hand made cards by Geraldine Turner. For that special day, cards can be made to your own requirements, unique to you. Our Off Licence carries a range of local English Wines and Beers together with a good selection of wines and spirits. We will provide wine and cask beers, at discounted prices, to local events with free loan glasses.
