Description

My name is Leigh-Ann, I'm Canadian, and I live in the United States. This gives me great insight on cross-border issues, like American vs. Canadian candy bars, and Curling vs. Golf. I enjoy coffee but not caffeine, as I like to think I'm agitated enough already. I think a day without Starbucks is a day without sunshine (there are no Tim Horton's here, so I make do with what I've got). I love animals and birds and fish and even most of the creepy crawlies on the sidewalk and in the garden, but I prefer it when they stay out of the house. My dream is to be able to make a living by watching "Animal Precinct" and "Emergency Vets" all day, so if you know of an opening in this department please drop me a note. Feel free to check out the photo gallery if you want to see 500 pictures of my dogs, cats, birds, etc. Get in touch with me via ME - AT - THEBLOGPOUND.COM. Seriously, "me".

Our house has a fairly large yard, and the part the dogs frequent is not landscaped. The dogs have Kuranda beds in the house with fleecy covers, and Dante’s crate has a nice padded bed, and upstairs we have carpeting, but outside the land is just dirt and rocks, plus a concrete patio. The dogs are not locked outside, but they seem to prefer to spend most of their free time out there, and go in and out via a doggie door. Every summer I’ve had to deal with Dante having “abrasions” on his elbows—the fur gets rubbed off from lying in the dirt, and the elbows get chapped and red—but this year it’s worse than it’s ever been. I think it’s because Dante now wants to sleep outside at night, whereas he used to sleep in a crate at night before “the incident” back in March. Now that he’s not spending nights in his crate, his outside time is extensive, and his elbows are a mess this year. They’re cracked and red and bleeding, and whenever I think I’ve fixed the problem, it just comes back again. Eli has the problem to a slight degree, but she’s more apt to seek a soft surface inside so her skin is in pretty good shape.

I used to just treat the sores with some Neosporin ointment and they’d be fine. If I saw Dante’s elbows were getting a bit crusty looking but weren’t bleeding, I’d slap on some Bag Balm. This year I’ve tried those things, plus Vaseline, and even Mushers’ Wax, and nothing is working. The sores heal over nicely for a day or so, and then he rubs them on the ground and they open up again. He also tends to lick off the stuff I put on his wounds unless I’m there to keep an eye on him. I’ve even tried to wrap his elbows in gauze pads, and while I can see the skin is healing underneath, it’s tough to keep the gauze on a spot which is always bending. The sores will close up and the hair will grow back as the weather gets cooler in the fall, and he spends more time inside, but in the interim I’ve got a bloody dog.
