In the early 70's John and Dottie attended a club in Capitol Heights, Maryland for about 11 years. In 1981 the club burned down. They waited for about 1-1/2 years for the owner to rebuild or start another club somewhere else but they never did. So in 1983 John and Dottie started having parties in their home in Baltimore, Maryland. This was just with friends that they had known from the other club that they had attended.
John and Dottie owned three building lots that would only hold 68 cars at their home. The first party was attended by 17 couples. They kept having parties every weekend at that location for five years. They out grew the facility and the parking lot. So to be able to accommodate the crowds they were having, they moved in 1989 to the building, which they occupy now.
We have been asked so many times what the premise was before John and Dottie purchased it. Back in the early 30's and 40's it was a service station (with the tall glass gas tanks) grocery store, restaurant and motel. The ledger that was found had rooms for rent for $2.50 and $3.00 a night. These rooms had not been rented out for quite a few years. Then as the years went on just before John and Dottie purchased the place it was known as a restaurant and a Honky Tonk roughneck bar. The neighbors were very dissatisfied with the noise and disruption of their sleep every night. Fights in the parking lot and the police being called all the time for disturbances. But since the place has been known as The Cottage there has been a different atmosphere in the community. The community and the neighbors accept us. When they bought the place it was gutted out completely and everything new put back in. The upstairs had not been used for about 15 years and there was no basement. So now when you visit you can see that a lot of work and effort was put into the building of the club.
