The Grange was the private residence of Dr William Valentine, who became the district surgeon, after immigrating from Martock in Somerset, England, in 1839. Together with his wife Mary Anne and their three children Dr Valentine lived and worked at The Grange until his death in 1876.An acknowledged botanist, amateur astronomer, and a maker of instruments both musical and medical Dr Valentine was an active and sometimes controversial pillar of the community.
A monument erected by local subscription in the grounds of St Luke's Church and in full view of The Grange reads:
