The Prince and the Ring edit

The Prince and the Ring is a timeless sufi folktale written by an unknown author in the times when Ghazali's works were at their zenith.

Once upon a time, there was wise, young king who had a five sagely advisers. On his 30th birthday, the advisers insisted that they get a present for the prince. Seeing this as an opportunity to test their wit, the prince thought for a moment and said, "I would like something that when looked upon, makes me overjoyed if I am depressed and depressed if I am overjoyed". Bewildered by his request, the advisers spent days trying to comprehend the meaning of the king's statement. Finally, the wisest of the advisers spoke "I have understood it. It is simple yet so beautiful." The next day, all five approached the king and gave him a ring. After looking at it, the king addressed the advisers and said "you are indeed the wisest of men". For on the ring was inscribed the following sentence: "This too shall pass".
