Victoria Advocate

Description

The Victoria Advocate, second oldest continuously published newspaper in Texas, celebrated its 150th year of service to its readers in 1996. The newspaper, with a Sunday circulation of approximately 40,000, has come a long way from when it was published once a week and received by only 2,200 readers.

The Advocate is received by a higher percentage of homes in its primary circulation area than most other newspapers in the nation, according to the latest industry statistics.

The newspaper's history began when it was originally called the Texan Advocate. Subscribers in those early days contended the proper spelling should be "Texian," so publishers Logan and Sterne admitted the error and changed the name. But that wasn't the only change to occur at the paper through the years. From 1874 to 1888, Ed Linn, a son of John J. Linn, owned and operated the paper and brought about a number of changes, including inserting the seal of Texas in the paper, altering the format of the columns and printing woodcut pictures.
