A healthy intestine is one which maintains a critical balance between various groups of bacteria such as ladtobacilli, streptococci, colstridia, coliform-4 and bacteriodes. Any suboptimal or adverse conditions such as, onset of disease, ingestion of antibiotics and /or medicines, improper feed or rest and harmful enviromental conditions, may endanger this fine balance in the intestinal flora, resulting in the reduction of the friendly or beneficial bacteria like lactobacilli and bifidobacteria in the gut. In the case of animal feed, it is partially digested in the alimentary canal, mouth and stomach. Finally in the intestine where the partially digested feed is ultimately metabolized by millions and millions of microorganisms working smiutaneously and syergistically.
For nearly a hundred years research has been conducted on lactobacilli cultures and many amazing facts about their "probiotic" nature have been established. Probiotic refers to those microorganisms which may prevent or reduce the effect of an infection caused by a pathogenic organism. In fact such probiotic aspects have been consequently related closely to the benificial, nutritional and therapeutic properties of these organisms.
Microencapsulation: Feed components such as moisture, minerals etc. have the potential to reduce the viability of the bacteria during mixing and storage. Microencapsulation protects the bacteria by creating a physical barrier until the bacteria reach the gut. At this time, enzymes break down the capsule and release the bacteria.
