About the Martian

A Martian Anthropologist is a somewhat hypothetical individual who represents an outside observer of the human condition or Planet Earth. So who is the Martian Anthropologist? Over at the Smoke and Mirrors blog recently, the author wrote a very funny entry: 14 Signs you may be suffering from a BCD (Blogger Compulsive Disorder). #2 was "You know that the Martian Anthropologist isn’t really an alien at all, or is he? He sure posts a lot for a human…" So am I an alien? THE MARTIAN'S BIOGRAPHY: I'm going to give you three possible bios on me -- and I swear that one of them is absolutely true. It'll be up to you to decide which one. Bio 1) I'm really from Mars. There's a book by Daniel Pinkwater called Alan Mendelsohn, the Boy from Mars

, in which the main character may or may not be from that planet. His best friend isn't quite sure if he's crazy or not, but the guy is so interesting and fun that he doesn't really care. At the very end of the book, he finds out for sure. It's a very good young adult book by a master. I lived on Mars until the age of 18 (Earth years), and then decided to move to Earth. But, you say, Mars is dead! True, in this time. But in the distant past (or is it the distant future?) Mars is very much alive. (There's a great short story by Ray Bradbury called Night Meeting , which "tells the story of the ancient past and distant future meeting on the Red Planet. In a chance encounter between a long extinct Martian and a newly colonizing Earthling, neither is sure who is in the present and who is the time traveller.") I not only planet-hopped, I time-travelled to the late 20th century and I've been living here ever since. Obviously, this gives me a unique outsider's persective about life, Earth, and everything. Bio 2) I grew up in an evil cult, and left when I was 18 years old. This cult was/is in the United States, but I was not allowed much contact with the outside world. I had to go to the cult school instead of a public school. I wasn't allowed to watch television or play with neighbor kids, for example. The only real window I had into the "real" world was reading books from the library. All of this changed when I was 18. I left. It was pretty tough for a while. I was terribly naive, as you might imagine. Eventually, though, I figured some things out. Obviously, this gives me a unique outsider's persective about life, Earth, and everything. Bio 3) I grew up in a third-world country. At the age of 18, my parents and I moved to the United States. Life in the United States is very different than the way I grew up. We moved for reasons I don't want to get into, but... Obviously, this gives me a unique outsider's persective about life, Earth, and everything. Well, it's up to you to decide which of these stories are true! Let me know what you think...

THE MARTIAN'S INTERESTS: There's an old Tom T. Hall song called I Love , in which he lists things that he loves about life. It starts off: I love little baby ducks, old pick-up trucks, slow-moving trains, and rain... In the spirit of that wonderful tune, here is a list of my interests, likes, loves, and ideals, in no particular order: Wu Wei, H.P. Lovecraft, Gothic or dark themes, fiction, poetry, art, etc., Sherlock Holmes, writing, reading, movies, simplicity, time travel, physics, philosophy, astronomy, learning, green tea, Mexican food, my basement hideaway, my home with its wonderful view, interactive fiction computer games, old-time radio shows, Millennium , X-Files, Angel , debate, Superman, Batman, new-age music, Gordon Lightfoot, Jim Croce, George Winston... The list goes on and on. These are just the things I can think of right now. I'm sure I'll be adding to it. And really, if you read my blog, you'll get to know me somewhat. The most important things in the world to me are my wife and son.
