- The author grew up on a small farm in rural Alabama where he developed a love for the outdoors and all living things. After graduation from college, where he earned a bachelors degree in civil engineering and a commission in the Army Reserve, he switched companies and jobs five times in seven years. It was during this period that he became interested in the martial arts and earned his black belt in taekwondo. Coming at last to the realization that his restlessness was the result of his career's failure to meet his mental, emotional or spiritual needs, he left engineering and opened a studio where he taught taekwondo for the next ten years.
