Title
Teaching Resource Center-Teaching Materials
Description
It all started in 1983. Tired of the exorbitant prices for necessary instructional supplies offered by commercial supply catalogs, we embarked on an experiment to bring materials of value and quality to teachers.
We always dreamed of sharing our professional knowledge and our public school teaching experience with our colleagues. So, working out of our garage after school and on weekends, we began making two materials by hand that we knew were in great demand by other teachers who taught the math program we did: geoboards and lapboards. We understood that our materials needed to stand up to the rigors of daily classroom use and had to be priced within a teacher's budget. Our mission, to offer teachers materials of the best quality with true instructional value and at the best price, found a responsive and appreciative audience with teachers around the country.
Our first big success came when we introduced the first Pocket Chart made of nylon, plastic and thread. Prior to this innovation, Pocket Charts were either made out of cardboard or oilcloth, plastic and tape--both of which did not last long. Classroom teachers knew as soon as they saw our Pocket Charts what value they held; other school suppliers laughed at our folly (at first). We soon followed this first Pocket Chart with our Monthly and Weekly Calendars, the Hundreds Chart, and the Extra-Wide and Mini-Pocket Charts--all original Teaching Resource Center designs. Now the other school suppliers were not laughing, rather they were creating their own versions of our wildly popular charts.
