TRC Commissioning the Past Home Page
Description edit
In South Africa, many had hoped that the TRC would serve to "put the past behind us" in the quest for a democratic future. Yet, as responses to the TRC Report have already shown, questions about how our history is made, remade and contested will have an enduring relevance, nationally and internationally, and will continue to provoke debate in a range of public and institutional fora. In particular, the extent to which exposing the 'truth' about the past will promote the cause of national reconciliation have remained opaque, disputed and in some respects unexplored.
The conference was organised in the belief that public engagement with these issues is of fundamental importance to reconstructing and democratising South Africa society.
The conference was designed to draw together a range of public intellectuals, community representatives, NGOs, academics and artists, in a broad-ranging exploration of the TRC and its impact.
