Truth in Justice

Description

My husband, Doug, and I researched and then wrote a book about the 1994 murder of Sarah Gonstead and the conviction of Penny Brummer for that murder in Madison, Wisconsin. In doing so, we uncovered evidence that excludes Penny as the killer, and we have since assisted in obtaining representation for Penny from the Innocence Project of the University of Wisconsin School of Law. We recognized the widespread nature of wrongful convictions, and, knowing that we could not possibly research and write books on all the cases, decided to start Truth in Justice to heighten public awareness. The web site appears to be the first one of its kind, and traffic has been increasing rapidly. When we can, we refer wrongfully convicted persons to appropriate resources, but we do not personally provide advocacy services.

One of the first advocacy resources for wrongfully convicted persons is Centurion Ministries, Inc. of Princeton, New Jersey. It was founded by James McCloskey after he assisted in vindicating a man wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Centurion's basic guidelines are sound, and so we have adopted some of them for cases featured at the web site. These are:

1. The person must be absolutely innocent of the crime charged. We would not, for example, feature a person who "drove the getaway car but didn't pull the trigger."
