A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 hit off the Pacific island nation of Tonga on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said, although there was no threat of a widespread destructive tsunami. The earthquake, which struck at 2:47 am (1247 GMT Tuesday), was centred 134 kilometres (80 miles) northeast of the capital Nuku'alofa, the USGS said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
