Description

Mark Jamra is a type designer, typographic designer and Associate Professor at Maine College of Art in Portland, ME. He has designed and produced typefaces for over 20 years. He has run his own design practice for 15 years and is also a partner in Alice Design Communication, a collective of communication designers and specialists in Portland. His typeface designs include: Alphatier, Brynmorgen Greek, Expo Sans, Quelle Bold (a proprietary font for Europe’s largest mail-order company), Latienne, ITC Jamille, Tacitus and Kinesis, an Adobe Original. His lettering and typefaces have been exhibited in numerous exhibitions, including “About Faces: Contemporary Issues in Type Design” at Harvard’s Houghton Library and in the Graphic Design Biennale in Brno, Czech Republic. In 2001, Alphatier and Kinesis were chosen as winners in the Association Typographique Internationale’s first international typeface design competition. In 2002, Alphatier was selected as one of 17 typefaces to represent the best in type design of the year 2001 by the Type Directors Club of New York in their annual competition.

Mark received his BFA in graphic design at Kent State University and completed his graduate studies in 1983 at the School of Design in Basel, Switzerland. He has lectured and published essays on type and typography, and taught letterform design and history at the Hamburg University of Applied Arts and Sciences and at the Polytechnic in Kiel. He has been a typographic consultant to the Hewlett-Packard Research Laboratories in Bristol, England and for URW Software & Type GmbH in Hamburg, Germany where he lived and worked as a designer from 1984 to 1995. His work and writing have been published in various international periodicals and books including “Graphis Typography 1”, “Visual and Technical Aspects of Type” from the Cambridge University Press and “Language Culture Type” from Graphis / Association Typographique Internationale.

Jamie Peloquin is the designer and manager of the TypeCulture® website. He graduated from Maine College of Art and began his career freelancing for various publications and at the Portland Press Herald where he designed information graphics and art for special sections. He later moved on to accept a Senior Designer position at Chermayeff & Geismar in New York City. There he was involved with projects for clients such as Major League Baseball, Domus Magazine, Feed (online magazine) and the Columbia School of Journalism. Eventually heeding the call to return to Portland, Jamie accepted a position at Image Works, a web development company, where he worked on web and video projects for such clients as Emery Waterhouse, Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System, and the Port of Portland. Jamie is currently the Creative Director at Axon Design & Marketing where he is involved with print and web projects for such clients as Shawnee Peak, BioProcessing Inc., EducateME, and the Maine Natural Areas Program.
