History

Like many universities of long history, UC was born out of charity; of two brothers: Charles and Augustus Storrs, in late 1880s. They gave it, some money, 170 acres of farmland, a former Civil War orphanage and barns with an intention to establish an agricultural school for boys.

On April 21, 1881, the General Assembly of the state of Connecticut voted to establish the Storrs Agricultural School.

Finally, on September 28, 1881, It opened with three faculty members and 12 students.

In 1883, six students graduated for the first time, with two-year certificates in agriculture.

In 1893, Storrs Agricultural School became Storrs Agricultural College and Connecticut’s land-grant college.

In 1899, Storrs Agricultural College became Connecticut Agricultural College.

In 1914, the Connecticut Agricultural College granted four-year college degrees for the first time.

In 1933, it changed again to Connecticut State College.

Finally, in 1939, it was officially christened “The University of Connecticut”.
