History

University of California Santa Barbara is situated on the picturesque California coast. This famous University covers 989 acres and is situated approximately 100 miles northwest of the city of Los Angeles. It was established in 1944 and comprises of 5 schools and Graduate Divisions. It ranks 13 amongst all public universities in the United States of America.

USCB or the University of California Santa Barbra is still remembered for being a major source of attraction during the Vietnam War. The university had to fight a number of unpleasant situations, including the infamous bombing at its faculty club. It was not an uncommon sight to find guardsmen, carrying weapon, strolling the campus and Isla Vista (building of a branch of the Bank of America in the student’s community).

The chancellor of this university is Henry .T. Yang, who had been appointed in 1944, and the faculty size of the university is 1054. University of California’s faculty comprises of 5 Nobel Prize winners, in chemistry, physics, and economics, and also comprises of other top class academicians, gathered from other eminent academic institutions, and a number of fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, The National Academy of Sciences, The National Academy of Engineering and The American Association for the advancement of Science.

Academic Programs

The 5 schools and the graduate division of UCSB offer about 200 majors, degrees and credentials. The university, which at present has almost 17,726 undergraduates, as well as about 2,833 postgraduates, has Big West Conference and University of California affiliations.

The undergraduate programs in college of creative studies are biology, chemistry, biochemistry, computer science, literature, mathematics, physics and music composition, arts with emphasis on painting, sculpture and book arts.

The undergraduate degrees and majors in the college of engineering are chemical engineering, computer engineering, electrical and mechanical engineering as well as computer science.

Undergraduate students award the Regents Scholarship program was started in the year 1962 in recognition of outstanding academic performance, so as to encourage students to perform better.

Student Programs

University Of California Santa Barbara is well known for its parties. Playboy Magazine rated it the second best party school in the nation.

At the University Of California Santa Barbara, the admission procedure is such that only the most capable candidates are selected. In fact this university has been rated as the ‘Most selective’ university by the US news.
