The University of Iowa (UI), located in Iowa City in southeast Iowa, is a major national research university and known for its achievements in the arts, sciences, and humanities. Many of the UI programs rank among the America's best. It is Home to the world-renowned Iowa Writers' Workshop!

UI is spread over a 1,900-acre campus by the Iowa River consisting of 11 colleges and housed in some 125 major buildings. The university boasts of a million plus visitors annually whose purposes vary from cultural and sports events to exhibitions, conferences and other educational programs.

Student Body

The annual students intake is over 29,000 of which some 64 % come from Iowa itself, 21 % from neighboring states, 8 % from the other states and 7 % make up International students from over a hundred countries. It also comprises a 9% minority students of Native American, African American, Asian and Latino students.

Faculty

There is a rich faculty of some 1,700 members with an impressive student / faculty ratio of 15:1.

UI faculty includes three Pulitzer Prize winners, four former U.S. Supreme Court justices, two National Medal of Science winners, four Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigators and many faculty serve in the nation’s most prestigious academies like American Academy of Arts and Sciences, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Engineering etc.

Housing

Library and Information Systems

UI Library network has over 4 million bound volumes, including more than 200,000 rare books, 500 historical manuscript collections and 11,000 licensed electronic journals, making it the Iowa's largest library and ranks 18th nationally in public research universities. Its Law Library worth special mention being #2 in America.

UI’s computing environment include 26 of what they call as Instructional Technology Centers with over 1,000 free computer terminals and wifi at some 40 locations, public places to check e-mail, high-speed net connectivity for each student in the dorms and the like.

Sports

Ui annually conducts the ‘Big Ten sports’, has 12 varsity teams for women and 10 for men. Ui has extensive sports opportunities and infrastructure swimming pool, athletic tracks, weight training equipment, tennis, racquetball courts etc.

Kinnick Stadium with a capacity of 70,585 for football and Carver-Hawkeye Arena, with capacity of 15,500, for other sports are major stadia.

Health Care

Patients and students alike benefit from the Vibrant Health Infrastructure and facilities at UI, including the Children’s Hospital of Iowa and the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. The UI Health Centre is one of the “Best Hospitals in America” for the 17th year in a row as per U.S. News & World Report, 2006. It caters for a stunningly over 200 health care specialties.

Press and Media

University of has three radio stations WSUI-AM, KSUI-FM and KRUI-FM; the latter being run by students! The university press runs Daily Iowan newspaper. UI also has DITV for news broadcasts and UITV, its campus cable network caters across Iowa City, the Cedar Rapids and neighbourhoods.

History

UI is established in February 25, 1847 as Iowa's first public institution of higher learning, immediately after Iowa became a state. The first classes commenced in March 1855 to 124 students including 41 women. The 10 acres site of what is now called Old Capitol formed the original campus. This building became the first capitol of the State of Iowa on December 28, 1846, till the capitol of Iowa was moved to Des Moines in 1857. Afterwards, Old Capitol became the first permanent "home" of the University.

  • The greatest first of University of Iowa came when it admitted men and women on an equal basis for the first time among the U.S. public universities.

UI is also the first in America to award advanced degrees based on creative work in writing and fine arts like theater, music, art etc., on par with academic research.

  • UI established the first law school and the first educational radio station in America to the west of the Mississippi!
  • Known for its continuing educational experiment, UI broadcast the world's first educational television programs.
  • UI is home to the world-renowned Iowa Writers’ Workshop.

Maibaum, playwriter and screenwriter for 13 James Bond films, Herbert Nipson Executive editor, Ebony magazine, Cory SerVaas, Editor and publisher of The Saturday Evening Post, Juanita Kidd Stout, first woman federal judge, Pennsylvania Supreme Court, James Van Allen who discovered the “Van Allen Belts”, Tennessee Williams, Author of "A Streetcar Named Desire" and many more.

Placement Rates

UI has a very high rate of job placement and / or acceptance into graduate school for its undergraduates. The College of Pharmacy typically has a 100% placement rate. Even in most other schools including College of Engineering, the combined placement or enrollment in Graduate School exceeds 90%.
