- Umma is an idea, whose time had come. Couple of people from our community attending a Conference in Washington DC in 2002 talked of the need for a Shia organizaton which could address the socio-economic, political and cultural issues not being addessed by the Centers and other Shia organizations in the United States. Two weeks later, they met with a few other prominent community leaders in Maryland, which led to the formation of UMAA (Universal Muslim Association of America), a name unanimously agreed upon by the founding members of the organization. The new organization was registered with the State of Maryland as a non-profit organization; later it was approved by the IRS as a Tax-Exempt organization.
