The Unconventional Lapidarist was started in order to produce and sell high quality products and the rare and unusual to feed the craving of others wanting great products but do not have to dig, cut, and polish the material themselves. I, James, and my partner Cindy make it a priority to find the best material at fair prices. We have a high quality standard which makes us very selective in what we obtain.
In February of 1999, a friend of mine asked if I would like to go on vacation. Barely familiar with the meaning of the word "Vacation", I figured I needed a break from work. You need to understand that my main profession thus far has been computer consulting. That field has a tendency to test your stress limits. Anyway, the thought of a vacation seemed like a great idea. As a consultant you are never suppose to go on vacation, you are suppose to be on 24/7 call (24 hours a day / 7 days a week); and you are critical to the success of the company. A scary thought; one consultant going on vacation could destroy a company. Being highly stressed at the time, I didn't even care where we were going.
Well we ended up in Tucson for the annual Gem & Mineral extravaganza. I don't think I have ever recovered from the mass overload of rocks, gems, and minerals. I knew that I wanted to get more involved in working with stones. Some people say that I went over the deep end. I think the term was "obsessive compulsive";. Incidentally, now I attend the show as a dealer at the convention center.
