The United Nations Development Programme is the UN's global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries with the knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. We work in 166 countries, helping national actors (governments, civil society, businesses and citizens) to find their own solutions to the development challenges they face. By drawing on UNDP’s pool of experience and skills, and those of our wide range of partners, we aim to ensure local capacity is strengthened in a variety of fields.
World leaders have pledged to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, including the overarching aim to halve poverty by 2015. UNDP's network links and coordinates global and national efforts to reach the Goals. Our focus is helping countries build and share solutions to the challenges of:
An important function for UNDP is helping developing countries attract and use development assistance effectively. In all of our activities, we encourage the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women. As a part of UNDP, United Nations Volunteers (UNV), supports sustainable human development globally through the promotion of volunteerism, and the direct mobilization of national and international volunteers.
