Globally the two billion people living in drylands often fail to benefit from local resources such as tourist attractions, says the UN Environment Programme. The thousands who live in Upper Mustang are no exception. Experts believe only 3% of tourism revenue generated by the area goes to the local community; additionally local people are often overlooked when decisions are made about tourism in Upper Mustang.
Carpets represent the top Nepalese export commodity in both the United States and European Union. But three out of Nepal’s top five commodities are those that face more competition after the elimination of quotas and that also are produced by other countries in the region.
The Governing Council of National Judicial Academy (NJA), the supreme policy making body headed by the Right Honourable Chief Justice of Nepal, adopted a resolution for mainstreaming gender issues in its policy and practice. The adoption of resolution is a landmark decision to help bring about gender responsive legal reforms in the country.
