History

Unisys was established in the year 1986 as the result of the merger between the mainframe corporations Sperry and Burroughs. In this deal, Burroughs bought Sperry for $4.8 billion. The merger being the largest in the computer industry during those times, it raised the level of the company to the status of the second largest computer company in the world. During the merger, the company had around 1,20,000. Based on the individual experience of these two firms, the company continued offering hardware, software, and services to various government agencies even after the merger. During 1989, the hardware sales of the company declined considerably, which the company managed by making a decisive shift into computer services besides maintaining the profitable revenue stream ensuing the maintenance of its installed base of proprietary mainframe hardware and applications. The notable milestones in the history of the company are the company’s development of the 2200 series in the year 1986 including the UNISYS 2200/500 CMOS mainframe. In 1988, the company acquired Convergent Technologies, the reputed makers of CTOS. In 1989, the company devised Micro A and in 2000, the company launched the UNISYS ES7000 servers. The company also released its 3D-Visual Enterprise (3D-VE) method of visualizing business rules and workflow in 2004. In the year 2006, Unisys sold off its Japanese distribution stake for $374 millions.
