- Rick was, literally, "poor whitey in the 'hood." Growing up in American poverty, he watched his mother fight to maintain the most rudimentary existence. Seeing her struggle between an unfriendly job market for single mothers and a degrading welfare system shaped his views at an early age. Surrounded by crime, drugs and violence, his mother taught him the value of hard work and determination and that in this great country, if you work hard enough you can succeed. His work ethic started at eight years of age with a Cleveland Press paper route; by age nine he was delivering The Cleveland Plain Dealer before school and The Press after school. Today, Rick is a seventeen-year member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters where he has served as a union steward, organizer, and delegate. He is currently enrolled at the George Meany National Labor College in Silver Spring, MD, where he is working towards becoming a union organizer with hopes of sharing the gift of unionism.
