Where did Universal-Excitement.com come from? Universal-Excitement.com rose from the ashes of www.usf.i8.com which I built in late 1998 and finally had finished and put on the internet for the world to see on November 10th 1999. It's hard to believe it took me a year to build a small site so many years ago. I was still homing in on my web design skills. It only took me a week to build this site in February 2004. Back in the late 90's as it still remains today there were/is too many Disney Theme Park sites out there and not a single one devoted to Universal Orlando. You have your IOAHQ.com, IOACentral.com and IOAGuide.com which cater to Islands of Adventure... but no sites dedicated to Universal Studios, CityWalk and the Hotels which combined make up Universal Orlando. In 1998 searched and searched all over for a Universal Orlando site and never found a single one. I love Universal, I have been going to the parks since before Universal Studios Florida officially opened in 1990. So I decided I would pull a 180 and shut down my Disney site and help promote an even better place that no one seemed to really know anything about. My hopes for my site were that I would get people into Universal, I don't want to take credit for it, but ever year my sites been online Universal's attendance has gone up. This site is seen by roughly 2 million people per year so it isn't impossible to think that this site has helped people plan vacations to Universal. When it came to naming the site I didn't know a good name, so I went with USF. The site at 1st was on a free domain and like I said it was pretty small, I got a free 50MB site and the site had to have an .i8.com in it. The site name wasn't catchy and people didn't get it and got confused over .i8.com, however at the opening of the site it was free and easy to create and upload. Within the 1st year I was using up all my free bandwidth and space, so I started to pay for the site and the more I paid, the bigger the site became. When 2003 came around my site was so big I was given a special deal with the host, to cater to the demand the site was having. So I was given 3 times the space and 3 times the bandwidth of their deluxe service and paying a bit more but for too.
So what happened to USF.i8.com? That made me create Universal-Excitement.com? It is really a miracle that this site is even up right now. The reason why... was because I had a fair share of bad experiences at Universal in 2003, and being known for the site by employees and upper management I thought my problems and situations would have been taken care of. I even thought I would have been treated with some respect but that didn't seem to happen. So it really made me question why I was supporting a company that thought so little of me that they would threaten to sue me for informing you the reader how I was treated by an employee and how it resulted in me being injured on a ride. 2003 really was not a good year in May while surfing the net like I still do today I was searching sites to see if anyone was using my materials without my permission. I came along a site www.universalorlandoguide.com which was a 100% identical clone of my site, so identical the person who stole it, forgot to remove my name and pictures of me off it. So it wasn't hard to prove who's site it was. However it took legal action to have shut down. Shortly after that I had this kid posting 3000 death threats to me in my guestbook at the site, an action that required me to call the cops, who tracked the 14 year old kid posting these threats from a computer in his High School Library. So with all these things happening to me and seeing how Universal treated me in 2003 I decided to call it quits. 4 years was a good run and I figured I would walk away. So I informed my host which required at least 30 days notice about any cancellation of service. The site was to paid for until March 2004, and I told them in December that I was not going to renew for another year. If I didn't make that call in December this site would not be here now. After I made the call to 50megs.com about not renewing the contract I went to all the sites and let everyone know they had 3 months to download any pictures, videos or information they wanted to keep. Here is where the story gets better, only a day went by after I told people that the site was being shut down in March 2004, that the site was shut down. I didn't shut the site down, I had a funny experience that morning, went to the store, go to pay for the food and the card is rejected, try... try... try again and nothing. So I didn't get the food, and when I got home I see a triple over charge for the site. I just talked to them the day before and said I was not renewing my contract so not only did they renew it, they renewed it for 3 years when they took out 3 times the original charge. So I demanded the money be put back into the account and that I did not want 2004 service. They apologized for the overcharges and agreed to put back all the money. Then later that day I get an IM "Hey Mike what's wrong with the site?" so I went to the site and seen it was shut down and DELETED! Longer story short they said "2003 is one year, 2004 is another year" basically saying if you pay for a year of service in December, in January they'll charge you again for a second year of service. Over a year later I got my money back after 3 letter to the attorney general and governors office and legal action. I felt bad that the fans of USF.i8.com were cheated out of there 3 months I decided to redo the site. Then I came up with the name Universal-Excitement.com and the rest is history.
So what has the site accomplished? Before www.usf.i8.com closed it was seen by 17 Million Visitors, and this site has been viewed by nearly 1 million unique visitors in less then a year by people in 85 countries around the world. I have had this site mentioned in the two central Florida papers the Florida Today and Orlando Sentinel as well as had the site featured on WKMG Local 6 news. This all in less then one year, sites like IOA Central have yet to ever see that kind of press. In all the years I have been doing a Universal Orlando site I have helped out several sites that have since faded in the wind and others that are still up today such as www.ioahq.com and www.orlandorocks.com. I have done the best I can ever do to try and get people out the park and in my endeavour I have made some enemies but for every one person who hates me about 100 more appreciate my hard work and effort. I have made many friends online as well as at Universal and the wealth of a man is determined by the amount of friends he has. So I am grateful for that and grateful knowing this site makes fans of Universal happy and excited about going to the park. Helping plan a trip and putting a smile on someone's face is enough accomplishment for me.
