Title

UNLOCKING AUTISM

Description

The incidence of autism is increasing at an alarming rate. Only 10 years ago, it was estimated that autism affected one out of 10,000 children. Two years ago, it was estimated that autism affected one out of 250 children. In April of 2002, the United States Congress declared autism a national epidemic. In January of 2004, the CDC, along with the American Academy of Pediatrics, estimated that one in 166 children are currently being diagnosed with autism.

In 1999, we launched the Open Your Eyes project, which is a collection of pictures of people with autism from all over the United States, as well as several other countries. It is our hope that the collection will put a face on statistics and will serve as an educational tool for the general public. In the first year, we collected over 3500 pictures. Our ultimate goal is 58,000. The pictures were displayed for the first time at the Hear Their Silence 2000 Rally in Washington DC.

In 2000 through Congressman Richard Baker (R-Baton Rouge, LA), we introduced a bill to the U.S. House of Representatives to issue a Sense of Congress to the United States Postal Service recommending that they design and issue an autism awareness stamp. Please visit our Washington Page for more information regarding the stamp's progress.
