Archaeological studies in India were initiated in 1784 with the establishment of the Asiatic Society in Bengal by Sir William Jones. He is credited with the identification of Chandragupta Maurya with Sandrokottos of Greek literature. He was also the first to develop parameters for the chronology of Ancient Indian History as well as the identification of the ancient site of Pataliputra on the confluence of the Ganga and Son.
