We are pleased to announce the founding of the University of Philosophical Research (UPR), an institution designed to enable the individual to develop a mature philosophy of life in association with a diverse and stimulating community dedicated to understanding and appreciating their unique possibilities in the unfolding universal pattern.
At the University of Philosophical Research (UPR) our name and our philosophy stem from the meaning of the world philosophy itself. This word harkens back to the ancient Greeks for whom phileo meant "love" and sophia meant "wisdom." This one word confronts us with two great mysteries and it begs the questions: what is love, and what is wisdom?
Wisdom is insight into the nature of things, a fundamental acquaintance with reality. The Greeks might have spoken in other ways about how human beings should relate to wisdom, suggesting pursuit of wisdom as the way of achieving self-gain and personal glory. They did not. Instead they suggested that love was the right relationship to have with wisdom, meaning that wisdom, or insight into reality, should be given affectionate attention regardless of how it might reflect on our self interest. This fundamental insight is the guiding "philosophy" of UPR.
