The first known recorded use of the name, ErisX, was online in the WWIV bbs community of Sonoma County, California in the late 80's, before the World Wide Web was available. The name migrated to the internet in the mid 90's.

There are other people across the globe who use the name, including a software firm and a DJ in Toronto, Canada. The name may be copyright by the originator, due to authored texts and pieces of art which bear the name and a copyright dated from the late 80's onward, but no legal suits have ever been brought to claim exclusive use or ownership.
