edit Something to know about me...
Sadly, my brother, Dan Horkheimer was shot and killed Saturday – August 11,2007 at his home in North St. Louis. He was 29 years old. Please keep my family in your thoughts and prayers.
[Suspect Sought in Shooting Death of Immigrant Advocate ]
Dan completed his undergraduate work at Saint Louis University and was involved with the Karen House Catholic Worker community. He and his wife, Courtney purchased a home near Karen House about 4 years ago and have been fixing it up since then. He was also a current Graduate student at Washington University (St. Louis), studying International Affairs.
In college, Dan was an International Studies Major and knew German, Mandarin and some Spanish. He studied for a year in China and 1 semester in Austria. For many years he has taught English as a second language to immigrants and refugees. He was also the manager of Legal Services of Eastern Missouri's Immigration Law Project. He provided legal assistance for many, many immigrants and really had a passion for their cause.
My brother grew up with a deep faith in God and believed that all life is precious and has dignity. I think that Dan cared about so many people because he believed that people are basically good. We all make mistakes, we all have wounds… life is about making choices between good and bad.
Dan knew that evil is a reality in our world. Still, he had hope.
Dan loved St. Louis. He believed that his little house in the middle of St. Louis could make the whole city better in its own little way.
Dan loved our country, and worked to make sure that everyone would have access to food, clothing, and a safe place to live. He believed that the work he did would help make our country honor the American ideals and principles set forth by our founding leaders.
Dan learned many languages and taught English to immigrants and refugees because he knew that communication is essential for a better society. The more we understand each other, the less we have to fear each other. When we begin to sense how we are all connected we may become friends and neighbors who want the best for each other.
Dan was humble and kind, with an inner strength and determination to live a radical life – a life of simplicity and love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness & self-control. Against such things there is no law. - Galatians 5:22-23
He shared this life with his beautiful wife, Courtney. He was a loving son, brother, uncle, co-worker, student, friend and neighbor. He planted a garden of hope in our lives; now that he is gone… it is up to us to make it grow.
The depth of my family’s sadness can only be known by the countless families who have lost a loved one through the brutality of arms. We stand in solidarity with you, as Dan lived in solidarity with the poor and the least among us.

- I learned so much about Dan over the past few days. He had several dignitaries and several undocumented workers at his funeral and letters of sorrow from people all over the world. The church was full of a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic gathering of people who were of every economic status imaginable. Dan's life is an example of how to live with simplicity, caring for our Earth and caring for the least among us, and this challenges us to do better ourselves.
edit He sounds like a wonderful person
I am sure that he inspired love and his memory will carry forward, sadly without him. My thoughts and prayers for you and your loved ones Mary. ~~ MarkDilley
