South Orange, NJ (PRWEB) May 5, 2007 -- The Seton Hall University Athletic Department awarded Dave Popkin, veteran Pirate basketball radio announcer, the O. Lawrence Keefe Award.
University President Monsignor Robert Sheeran and Pirates Athletic Director Joseph Quinlan presented the award to Popkin at the annual Seton Hall Men's Basketball awards banquet held last week at Mayfair Farms in West Orange, NJ. The award honors the memory of Seton Hall's long-time sports information director Larry Keefe. The rare distinction is presented to a member of the media recognizing that individual's contribution to Seton Hall athletics.
"When I was told I was being honored, I immediately appreciated the context and history behind the Keefe Award. It is an honor to join a distinguished fraternity that includes past recipients like Jerry Izenberg, Bob Ley, Jerry Passaro, Pat Scanlon and Warner Fusselle," said Popkin. The SHU Athletic Department bestowed the honor upon Popkin in front of nearly 200 banquet attendees ranging from current members of the Pirate athletic community, former basketball greats, members of the media, Seton Hall alumni, and distinguished guests, including Acting New Jersey Governor Richard J. Codey.
During the ceremony, Popkin added, "Just to be mentioned in the same sentence with these past recipients is a real treat. I am proud to be part of the Seton Hall family and look forward to many more great years."
