The University of Texas at Austin

The University of Texas at Austin, also known as UT or Texas, is a doctoral and research university and is located in Austin, Texas. It was found in 1883. The university is considered to be a "Public Ivy" and had the glory of having the fifth largest single-campus enrollment. The university has more than 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students and around 20,000 faculty members and staff.

History

Austin was chosen as the location of the main university of Texas in 1881. The university opened its doors on September 15, 1883. Till 1930s the Victorian Gothic styled main building was the central pint of the huge 40-acre campus site and was used for all kinds of work. The need for more library space resulted in demolishing of the main building in1934 resulting in lots of objections and protests by both students and teachers. The modern day tower and present main building are constructed on that place only.

Administration

The organization chart of University of Texas, Austin consists of a President, Executive Vice President and Provost, offices of community and school relations, diversity and community engagement, information technology, employee and campus services, public affairs, research, financial affairs, student affairs, institutional relations and legal affairs amongst others. The university also holds HR forums and town meetings.

Academic Profile

The college has many academic departments. Some of them are college of education, college of engineering, college of fine arts, graduate studies, school of nursing, college of liberal arts, college of natural sciences, college of pharmacy, and school of social work amongst the others. The McCombs School of business offers specialization in accounting, finance, and Information risk and operations management system. The college of communications offers courses on advertising, communication sciences and disorders, radio-television –films, school of journalism etc. The college of engineering has sub branches like chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, petroleum and geosystems engineering, material sciences and engineering etc. the liberal arts college offers a wide variety of courses on subjects like economics, classics, humanities program, Latin American studies, geography and the environment, linguistics, religious studies program etc.

Faculty and Research

The university's faculty members include educationalists like winners of the Nobel Prize, the National Medal of Science, the Pulitzer Prize, the National Medal of Technology, and many other awards. The University of Texas recruits eminent faculty and facilitates research in the department of sciences and engineering.

The university has more than 90 research units. The university has established research partnerships with the University of Texas Health Science Center, University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, the Johnson Space Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, International Center for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. In addition to research in general business, natural science and engineering field, it also promotes research in upcoming fields like nanotechnology and materials engineering for latest technology in semiconductors.

Student Life

left|130px The students enjoy many extra curricular activities and have excellent in-campus facilities. The fourteen residence halls of the campus are well accommodated and the dining facilities are also noteworthy. There are more than thousand student organizations in the campus. The campus facilities include campus club, common center, swimming pools, health services, custodian services etc. The University of Texas offers a wide range of intramural and varsity sports programs. Special attention is given to the physical fitness and wellness of students and the college has many sporting tournament and competitions to keep students engaged.

It also has a host of activities for art and entertainment enthusiasts. Regular workshops are held in theatre, dance, films etc. there are also many museums like Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art, Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum etc.

IT and Technology

The campus is well connected through the wide usage of modern IT systems. The campus has good computer labs and network connections. The teaching through Blackboard system, which is, e-learning is also widely popular here. There are ample library computing facilities, technology rooms, web publishing tools, research in computing, satellite and cable TV facility and other such IT based services.

Business and Enterprise

The university has n entrepreneurship culture and has entrepreneurship classes, competitions etc. It also has collaborations with many corporate relations to help students.
