Description
United Volunteer Fire & Rescue provides fire, rescue, and emergency medical services to the boroughs of East McKeesport and Wall in eastern Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. As of January 18, 2006, UVFR is dispatched by Allegheny County 911.
UVFR was established in 1998 when East McKeesport Volunteer Fire Company #2 and Wall Volunteer Fire Department merged into a new company. An official charter was granted in 2000.
The merger came about as the result of a dwindling pool of volunteers in the Pittsburgh area, and a decrease in income from fund drives and other fundraisers. It was decided that the best way to keep the two companies afloat was to combine them, which would result in a larger pool of volunteers, as well as the financial benefits of avoiding the costly and wasteful duplication of fire and rescue equipment in two small towns. The net result: a better level of fire protection for the residents of each community.
