VancleveFord.com hand-built dealership guided by strong principles
Title
Welcome to Van Cleve Ford
Description
The world was a different place in the fall of 1953. In national interest, the Korean War had been over for just three months and locally the, then, new Morton Hospital had been open for one year and the small towns of Kosmos and Riffe were thriving.
As much as things have changed, one thing has remained constant for the past 50 years locally, the family-owned and operated Ford dealership in Morton. Originally named Van Cleve Motors, the dealership began as a three-way partnership between a trio of father George Van Cleve; and sons, George, Jr. "Ladd" and James Sr. At the helm and day-to-day management, though, were Jim Sr. and Joan Van Cleve. George and Ladd eventually stepped out of the business with Jim and Joan continuing on to build the business up to what East Lewis County has known for decades as Van Cleve Ford.
The dealership's October 1953 opening did not, by any measure, go unnoticed by the community. The November 19, 1953 edition of The Morton Journal carried a front page-article inviting everyone to the grand opening of the dealership. The article obviously worked as the next week's newspaper estimated 600-700 people attended the event, complete with dancing to a live orchestra, refreshments and door prizes.
