Description

The deluge we call Katrina has separated us from the tradition of creation that once made New Orleans a pinnacle of American culture. The homes and cars splintered and displaced by the flood waters are the decaying corpse of a city where Tennessee Williams and Louis Armstrong thrived. The exodus from New Orleans and the consequential economic and political wounds have quenched the antediluvian spirit of this place. But water alone cannot destroy its heritage, which like the phoenix rises ever again from its own remains.

Can New Orleans be rebuilt into the nexus of poesis it once was? Some of the artists, musicians, and writers who lived here before the storm have returned, but what of the heritage to which they contributed?

You cannot put your foot in the same river twice. Nor can you build the same city twice. The phoenix has forever changed when it shakes off the ashes of its previous life. Born, and born again in death, it perishes only when it fails to exceed the glory its former manifestations knew.
