Welcome to a short and colorful account of the history of Venture Retreat, based on a May, 2005 interview with Acting Director Bob Berthiume.
Venture Retreat's roots run deep in the Human Potential Movement in California. Beginning in the early 1960's, small peer led groups that made decisions by consensus ("in process") were interconnected from San Francisco to Berkeley and south to Big Sur's Esalen Institute. The property that is today known as Venture Retreat, was first occupied by a commune that called itself "Venture" and its members were active in "becoming who you are", a central interest within the Human Potential movement.
Bob Berthiume, Acting Director of Venture's retreat center, joined theVenture group in 1975, 11 years after the commune residents at Venture purchased the property that later became the retreat center.
