About Us

Vermont Country Birdhouses was founded by Jim Kardas in 1996. Jim grew up in Manchester, Vermont in the 1950’s. In his own words ...

I started Vermont Country Birdhouses after a career as an advertising copywriter. My decision to build birdhouses came in the winter of 1996 while I was crafting a birdhouse for friends who were to be married. I had always built birdhouses for myself and this couple had admired my creations, so I decided a birdhouse would make an appreciated gift. As I worked away I wondered what it might be like to have a birdhouse business. Could I make a living building birdhouses? If so, what would they look like? I had always loved the character of Vermont’s historic structures. Why not, I thought, use them for inspiration. By project’s end I had convinced myself that I could make it work. That was the easy part. The real challenge, I discovered, was in developing a finishing process that gave my birdhouses the old-world character I was after. For several months I experimented with countless arts and crafts techniques using a hundred different paints, products and brushes. After a fortuitous happy accident, or two, I finally hit upon a nine-step process that gave my birdhouses the character I desired. I launched my business in the spring of 1996. And after 10 years I still can’t wait to get up the next morning and go to work. How many can say that?

Vermont Country Birdhouses is located in Danby Village, a small farming and marble community in southwestern Vermont, 12 miles north of Manchester. All birdhouses are crafted in our workshop.
