Vertex42.com is a leading provider of spreadsheet templates, calendars, financial calculators, and articles related to Microsoft Excel®. It also hosts an extensive directory of Excel resources. Vertex42™ is a provider of numerous templates for the OpenOffice.org template gallery as well as the Google Docs template gallery.
History
Vertex42 LLC was founded on April 29, 2003 by Jon Wittwer who was a student at Brigham Young University at the time, working on a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Wittwer says that "it began as an experiment - a desire to see what creating an online business would be like." At first, Vertex42 provided a single product called The Market Matrix, a spreadsheet tool for gathering online market statistics to help budding entrepreneurs find an online niche. Based upon his own use of this tool, Jon decided to focus on creating more Excel spreadsheet templates.
As an early adopter of Google AdSense, Jon discovered that he could provide free spreadsheets and earn enough from the ad revenue to keep the business going while finishing school (although he still had to work a different job to pay for school). He says "providing free downloads dramatically cut down on requests for technical support," which was very important for someone trying to finish up a dissertation. "Vertex42 was basically just a hobby during the first couple years," he says.
After completing his degree in 2005, Vertex42 picked up and moved to Albuquerque, NM where Dr. Wittwer continued to develop spreadsheets and write articles on topics related the use of Excel.
According to Dr. Wittwer, Vertex42 has logged over 15 million spreadsheet downloads since 2003. In July of 2008, Google announced their new Google Docs Template Gallery, with Vertex42 listed as one of the original template providers. Vertex42 also became a significant contributor to the OpenOffice.org template gallery.
Vertex42 has begun creating templates for Microsoft Word, beginning with a Free Resume Template.
