Vulcan Materials Company is also the largest manufacturer, distributor and seller of construction aggregates and construction materials in the country. The construction materials division produces crushed stone, gravel and sand. The aggregates division produces rock asphalt, reclaimed asphalt & concrete. They also sell asphalt mixes and associated products, trucking services, concrete and transportation of water. The company’s customer portfolio includes residential contractors to commercial contractors to heavy construction to railroad to electric to state to county and municipal governments. The company meets the requirements of its customers through the network of rail, truck and water distribution points.

History

1909 – The company is founded by the name Birmingham Slag Company primarily a family owned business.
1916 – The company is bought by Charles Ireland and managed by his sons Barney and Eugene.
1932 – The company’s sales are affected by the great depression after 1932.
1939 – The company becomes a key supplier of materials to Tennessee Valley Authority projects.
1942 – The company signs a 3-year contract for supplying construction materials for the war.
1944 – The company enters into a joint undertaking with Lambert Brothers, Inc. who are one of the biggest aggregate producer in the south.
1950 – The company grows and had more than six hundred employees with sales of more than twenty million and a net profit of $1.5 - $2.5 million per year.
1951 – Charles the son of Glenn Ireland is selected as the president of the company. The company becomes a key supplier of aggregates thanks to Federal Highway Program undertaken by Eisenhower.
1956 – Birmingham Slag debuts on NYSE and becomes a publicly traded company, the company also gets it new name Vulcan Materials Company after a merger with Vulcan Detinning Company.
1957 – The chemical division is established after mergers with Materials Corporation and Union Chemicals.
1959 – Vulcan acquires North Carolina based company W.E. Graham & Sons
1968 – A top class chlorinated organic chemical plant is built on Greenfield site in Geismar, Louisiana.
1975 – The chemical division relocates to Birmingham, Alabama from Wichita, Kansas.
1976 – Vulcan enters into a JV with a Saudi Arabia firm to provide aggregates and ready mix.
1980 – Vulcan buys BASF’s Port Edward, Wisconsin based Chloralkali Plant
1981 – The sales of the company hit approximately $780 million making its way into Fortune 500 list at 367.
1984 – Vulcan builds first commercial size membrane cell Chloralkali facility in the country located at Wichita, Kansas.
1987 – Vulcan buys White’s Mines, Inc. and its subsidiary companies expanding it business in Texas and at the same time it also sells its detinning business.
1988 – Vulcan Chemicals purchases Vista’s methyl-chloride business and becomes a key supplier to silicones industry.
1990 – In its biggest ever acquisition the company buys Reed Quarry located in the vicinity of Paducah, Kentucky.
1992 – The company gets ISO 9002 certification at all its chloralkali plants. The company also buys sodium chlorite producer Olin and builds the biggest Sodium Chlorite Plant.
1994 – Callaway Chemical Company belonging to Exxon is bought by Vulcan.
1998 – Vulcan enters into a JV with Mitsui
1999 – Vulcan takes over Calmat, Inc. opening up its aggregates business into Arizona, California and New Mexico.
2000 – The current companies in its Performance Systems Business Unit are joined to form Vulcan Chemical Technologies. It also acquires aggregates operations of Tarmac America thus further spreading its wings in the eastern region of the U.S.
2003 – The company divests its chemical business assets barring sodium chlorite.
2005 – Vulcan Chemicals is divested to Occidental Chemical Corp.
