WM2007 - Joi Ito on Sharing
The sharing economy / Joi Ito edit
- Innovation and the Internet
- "The Stupid Network" - David Isenberg
- "Small pieces loosely joined" - David Weinberger
- Clay Shirky - the cost of failure is very small - important for innovation
- Professional vs. Amateur / The idea that Amateur is lower quality should be challenged
- Many people equate intelligence with money / of course many of us are motivated by things other than money. Pleasure and Happiness are different. There is a certain kind of happiness that comes from giving/receiving, sharing and being an active participant in a community. Money can buy pleasure, but you can't buy love/happiness.
- "Pirates" - "you're sharing on the Internet, you must be a pirate". Pirates or Fans?
- "Remix" - stifling free speech in video
- "Copyright" - unregulated, fair use / In the digital world, every time you use something, you make a "copy", so the old rules are harder to apply.
- Law+technology = DRM
- Technology has allowed a lot of "control" / creep from commercial businesses to apply control that technology affords us back into the real world
- Copyright / all rights reserved vs. no rights reserved vs. some rights reserved Creative Commons
- Creative Commons, like OpenSource for content, also a user interface for copyright
- Creative Commons, 6 variants
