Description

The concept of buying groups is not new, and has been around since the 1900’s but mainly within retailers. This is where a multiple of retailers put forward one agent to purchase on their behalf by directly buying from the manufacture in bulk and splitting it between all the participants by passing reps or any other agents that use to sit in the middle. Within New Zealand the best example of this is the Foodstuffs chain. Foodstuffs is the buying group whom purchase goods for all the independently owned and operated Pak N Save, New World, and Four Square Retailers. The Foodstuffs buying group service 710 individually owned retail outlets that go under the various trading brands, is the third largest combined company that is trading within New Zealand at this present time. Foodstuffs have warehouses strategically located across New Zealand that Manufactures feed their goods into, foodstuffs then distribute this into their own buying group members upon their request. This has lead to the delivery of goods to the shelf at a lower price than before.

A buying group’s concept is simple, cut costs at all cost by making systems more efficient. Members of a buying group work together in a collective format to protect the group at all costs because without the group you loose your voice and volume power.

Buying groups of consumers have a shady past; Amway was one of many and has put a bad light on a consumer buying group. The main issues that consumer buying groups bring is the lack of understanding on the consumers part. Consumers want the cake and to eat it also. They want service as well as supper low prices, they want money back guarantees but goods at cost price, and most members of these groups do not consider the over all benefit of the group over their personal gain – this fact leads to most failing or being developed as pyramid scams requiring a huge buy in price tag.
