The first Gaggia appeared in London in the early 1950s in a Soho Coffee Bar (it is rumoured that this Gaggia was smuggled through Ireland to avoid tariff tax), bringing with it a sense of cosmopolitan style that appealed in particular to a burgeoning youth market, by the early 1960s there were over 2000 coffee bars in the UK, mostly using Gaggia. These coffee bars were opened by a diverse range of people including architects, antique dealers, wine merchants, interior decorators, sculptors, dentists and film stars. This lead to a unique look and feel to the London coffee bar that made it stand apart from more traditional bars and restaurants. The London Café Culture experience did temporarily come to Ireland in the 1960’s but failed to make a strong impression with the public until the 1990’s
Good-quality coffee grew again in popularity from the 1980s onwards and, in the 1990s, the growth of the Starbucks chain helped. While some preferring independent coffee bars with Gaggia machines, the growth of Starbucks has helped fuel the popularity of going out for a coffee among all generations.
