- More people own horses today than at any other time in American history. Today domestic horses are found throughout the world, with a total population estimated at 60 million. Many are lucky and are owned by loving individuals or families, but huge numbers are not. Hundreds of horses stand forgotten and uncared for in fields and barns all over our 50 states, facing years of hunger, thirst, parasite infestation, and illness. Hundreds more end up in auction barns or inhumane slaughter houses. Nobody wants them anymore. Not all are old, sick or "used up". Many are young, healthy animals that didn't meet the needs or expectations of the people who owned them.
