Description

White Noise is an online magazine that explores the media through reviews of music, film, television, literature, websites and news outlets. If you’re thinking: “not another online review site!” your apprehension is understandable. Review sites are the Starbucks of the internet; they’re everywhere and the people who work at them smell like coffee. Pitchforkmedia, Popmatters, and Stylus Magazine – just to name a few – all do a fine job of assigning numbers and ascribing words to the pop culture of today’s First World. So what the fuck is the point of another review site, you so kindly ask?

Unlike the majority of online review magazines, our focus is not on what’s new. Pop culture has always had a very short-term memory and many of us - who grew up with MuchMusic (or MTV for you wacky Americans) and Super Mario Bros. and whose sense of pop culture history begins with Nirvana, Pulp Fiction and Full House - have lost the sense of our cultural history within the white noise of the media that surrounds us everyday. We are not interested in perpetuating this cultural amnesia. At White Noise, our goal is to examine the role the media has played in shaping the world we live in today by examining its past, present and future.

Why reviews? Because it’s pop culture we’re interested in. And we’re not academics. We do give ratings, but recommending or not recommending the purchase of particular media products is not our primary intent. It’s just that we know from experience that a lot of people won’t read reviews that don’t give a rating/grade. It’s all the damn brainwashing from schools. But giving a work of art – even a work of pop art – a numbered rating is capitalistic and just plain wrong. So we give clever little word ratings instead.
