Title

Canadian Dachshund Rescue

Description

Canadian Dachshund Rescue (CDR) was founded in 2001 by the Canadian members of US Dachshund rescues. The exchange rate put the US adoption fees out of reach of many potential adopters and transportation was always a hassle. The group started with 3 members working at least 30 hours every week on top of full-time jobs, funding the rescue out of their own pockets. We have grown to over 30 members covering six provinces and hope to keep expanding.

Our mission is to educate people about puppy mills and to encourage responsible pet ownership. We'd like to put ourselves out of business. Our goal is to ensure that no dachshund in Canada will be put to sleep for lack of a home. We want to be able to rescue any dachshund or mostly-dachshund mix regardless of age or health.

Susan is a founding member of Canadian Dachshund Rescue, though she didn't actually welcome a rescued dachshund into her home until last summer. In 1998 she wanted to adopt a pair of dachshunds but was unable to find any dachshunds for adoption in Canada. She ended up buying a pair of dappled boys from a breeder, then found out about Dachshund Rescue of North America from a dachshund-lover's online bulletin board. She became their first Canadian member and her first placement was Julio. When one of her boys died she adopted a dappled girl from Canadian Dachshund Rescue, then a second girl when her foster wasn't adopted, and then one more because she decided that 4 houses in 4 years was enough for one dog - she isn't just the first President, she's also a client.
