Windows 99 Gallery - Advertizing of Life - Hammer Propaganda

When on the ninth day of bombing, on April 1, 1999, the Varadin Bridge in Novi Sad was hit, windows and glass doors on buildings and houses situated along both sides of the Danube flew out of their frames and broke. The very next day, people in other parts of the city began to cover their windows with wide tape. Soon, an anonymous protector of the people’s spirit named the taped windows, "Windows ‘99", associating the computer program with the picture of the windows on the streets of Novi Sad.
This is when we began to interpret the things surrounding us in a different manner. We no longer threw away the plastic bottles of our favorite drinks, we filled them with water when there was water to be found, or we cut them in half and used them as funnels for pouring gasoline when we were able to buy it on the "black market". Many packages, both cartons and tin cans, were saved and put to completely new uses.
The project is a result of the civilian response to the war in Yugoslavia in 1999. As such, it has not been ordered by anyone and cannot be relinquished to any organization or institution.
