Title

Richard Winters Horsemanship

Description

After six years on their high desert ranch in Lassen County, the Winters relocated to the sunny hills of southern California. Richard and Cheryl have moved their family and business to the prestigious and historical Thacher School in Ojai, California!

Asked how Thacher School--Richard Winters partnership came about, both Winters and Michael Mulligan, the School's Head Master, describe the other and their respective endeavors as "the real deal." As a visiting Thacher clinician, Winters followed the footsteps of many noted horsemen to visit and influence the school's horse program. The late Monty Foreman was primary on a list that includes Buck Brannaman, Ray Hunt, Bryan Neubert, Richard Shrake and Dr. Robert Miller, DVM. "We think Richard is one of the best clinicians in terms of his ability to work with humans and horses." Says Mulligan, describing Winters' teaching style as "clear, thoughtful and organized."

Winters offers equal praise. "When I came and observed Thacher's horse program I saw students who'd been riding just a few weeks doing better than a lot of adult riders with years of experience." While riding mechanics are well addressed at Thacher, Winters applauds the fact that horse psychology is a huge part of their horsemanship education. "They are really giving kids the reasons why certain things work and teaching them how to present things as the best deal for the horse."
