Often described as "Twitter for enterprise," Yammer is a social networking and communication platform for organizations. Like Twitter, Yammer is designed to send relatively short messages to a group of people. However, unlike Twitter, all communication on Yammer is private to the network of a single organization, and you must have an organization-specific email address to sign up for it. You can Yammer via the Web, text message (i.e. SMS), iPhone app, Blackberry, or a downloadable desktop application.
Winner of the coveted Techcrunch 50 top prize, Yammer is a young start-up that has caught on quickly among businesses. Its flexibility - you can see either everyone's Yammers or selectively follow people in your department - allows it work for both very small and very large organizations.
