Description
Rich clay deposits in Southeastern Ohio made a perfect base for pottery making by the pioneers. They made practical items for use in home and work from this natural resource. As the industry grew, skilled workers produced dinnerware, crocks, storage jars, and tile. Our company, Zanesville Pottery, was formed in 1947 along Route 40 as a small "outlet" store representing the local factories in the area. In 1953, the current family's father bought the business and continued to run it in that location for another 14 years. In 1967, the business was relocated to face the newly built Interstate 70 which bypassed the old Route 40 location. Here the business grew and other family members became involved in the operation.
In recent years it has become difficult to find local pottery sources. The old potteries that once thrived in this area have slowly faded out of existence due to poor management, fires, or foreign competition. Presently, only a handful manufacturers still exist in the area and their fate currently remains uncertain. The lack of local suppliers has forced us to find products from all across the United States and all over the world.
Having been in business now for over 50 years and with the third generation of family involved, Zanesville Pottery Inc. is still growing. Over the last half century, our company enlarged by adding two new buildings, an online store, and a host of other improvements. This coupled with our relentless determination and the loyalty of our customers has turned Zanesville Pottery from a Route 40 tourist stop into a countrywide destination.
